56% Access Internet from Home; Internet Cafes Badly Hit
56% internet users in the age range of 15 to 25 access internet from the comforts of their home. Parinama.org conducted a internet poll from October 11 to November 20, 2009 on this subject. The most interesting fact that came up during this study is that only 14% of the poll participants used a Browsing Center/Internet Cafe to use internet.
Last year in a similar poll 40% participants used internet from home and 31% used internet from browsing centers. It clearly shows the popularity of broadband connections in India is steadily increasing. And owners of Internet Cafes are feeling the heat.

There were total 1176 poll participants. A whooping 56% of the voters access internet from their home (read broad band companies like BSNL, Reliance and Airtel are minting money). 16% of the poll participants access internet from educational institutions like school, colleges etc. 14% of the poll participants access internet from Browsing Center. And a 13.5% access internet from the office.
This poll was conducted between October 11, 2009 to November 20, 2009. The top 10 cities in which Parinama got traffic during this time frame are Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chandigarh, Pune, Jaipur and Indore. The visitors fall in the age range of 15 to 25 years.
Are the traditional browsing cafes finding it difficult to find customers despite bringing down the rate to 5 or 10 rupees per hour? A recent Comscore study shows that there is an steady increase of 17% of internet users in India. The Comscore study has excluded the traffic from internet cafes and mobiles. Is there a reason for this, apart from getting the unique IP traffic from home and office? Is this the end of browsing center era?
There is a surge of online educational portals (thanks to Online CAT) to offer training and coaching to candidates over internet. It looks like such companies can capitalize the benefit of more broadband connections as they can be accessed virtually any time as opposed to browsing centers.
